Top 15!

December 20, 2010

After a few months of domestic chaos, I finally managed to grab a few moments the other night to get back in front of the computer with making music in mind… and I have to admit I found it a pretty testing experience. What with one thing and another I’ve probably been doing a lot more listening to music than recording or trying to write it over the last few months.

With that in mind, it struck me that now seemed as good a time as any to reflect on the music that I’ve enjoyed in the last 12 months or so. Here’s a top fifteen of my favourites – some old, some new and some that I’ve just rediscovered…

Diario – Daisuke Miyatani

The Mountain Record – Yuichiro Fujimoto

Memory – Animal Hospital

Hidden Name – Stephan Mathieu & Janek Schaefer

Causers of This – Toro Y Moi

Cosmogramma – Flying Lotus

Returnal – Oneohtrix Point Never

Rifts – Oneohtrix Point Never

Best Coast – Crazy for You

African Dub All-Mighty, Chapter 1 – Joe Gibbs and the Professionals

Hum – Sawako

Frictionalisms 1994/2009 – Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir

Are Kisses Out Of Fashion? – Sudeten Creche

Nunatak / Teimo / Permafrost – Thomas Koner

Epsilon in Malaysian Pale (1975) – Edgar Froese

Review of ‘Fern Battles’ on Disquiet.com

November 1, 2010

Just found this really nice review of ‘Fern Battles’ on the fabulous Disquiet – been so busy with non-music related projects like moving house, looking after my son and trying to get some sleep that I’d missed it – a belated thanks to Marc.
I keep promising it, but new music and new field recordings will be on their way, hopefully in the not too distant future – it’s been a hectic few months but things are slowly beginning to settle down. Once I have a new, clear space to work in, (that isn’t full of cardboard boxes and children’s toys), then watch this space…

Autumn is coming!

Just a short recording of the wind blowing through the tree outside our house as the weather starts to get distinctly autumnal…

So, I’ve just released a short mini-ep of four tracks called fern battles, which you’re all welcome to download for free from http://bit.ly/96GzCG if the fancy takes you.
There’s four tracks – two of which, ‘rita’ and ‘black hill’ have made an appearance here – the other two, ‘english landscape’ and ‘sketch I’ are new. Hope you enjoy it if you have the time!

‘Morning’ video

August 31, 2010

Well, this is a lovely thing – the excellent Jessica Aliaga Lavrijsen has taken the time to make a video for my track ‘Morning’. It’s thoroughly gorgeous, and I’d like to say a big thank you to Jessica for her work. Check out her site at http://bit.ly/dfx6oC

Now playing…

August 23, 2010

Just listening again to probably one of my favourite pieces of music ever – the original 1975 version of Edgar Froese’s Epsilon in Malaysian Pale. A bit of a typically silly, overblown title, but just a gorgeous pair of tracks that make up one of the few pieces of vinyl that I’ve always just bought on sight – I’ve got about four copies.

Have a listen if you ever get the chance – mellotrons and field recordings working together beautifully. Steer well clear of the horrible reworking done by Froese himself, I think in 2005 – a stinker, and truly a case of not knowing when to leave well alone.
